You can run a serious newsletter for a long time with very little software. The risk is not missing a tool; it is adding five before you have written ten issues.

## Day one

- **A publishing platform** with email, a web archive and signup forms in one place. Ghost does all three.
- **A notes app** you open every day, for ideas you will otherwise lose.
- **A spreadsheet** for your editorial calendar and a simple log of each issue's numbers.

## When you have a rhythm

- **A link shortener or UTM builder**, so you can see which places send you readers.
- **An image tool** with a few saved sizes for headers and social cards.
- **A scheduling habit**, not an app: write on one day, edit on another, send on a third.

## Upgrades that usually pay for themselves

- **Custom domain email**, once sponsors or partners write to you.
- **A paid stock photo or illustration plan**, if images are part of your format.
- **An accountant**, the year you first earn real money from the newsletter.

## What to skip for now

Growth tools that promise thousands of subscribers, complex automation sequences, and any analytics product you will check once and forget. Your list is small enough to understand by reading replies.
