Formal referral programs with rewards can work, but most small newsletters grow through something simpler: one reader sends an issue to a friend. You can make that more likely without any software.

## Write forwardable issues

An issue gets forwarded when it solves a problem the reader knows someone else has. Practical, specific pieces travel further than general commentary.

## Make forwarding obvious

- End the issue with one line: "Know someone who would use this? Forward it, they can subscribe here."
- Make sure the web version of every issue has a clear signup form, because forwarded readers often open it in a browser.

## Thank the forwarders

When a new reader replies saying a friend sent them, tell the friend. A short thank-you note costs nothing and is remembered.

## Look at the web archive

Readers who arrive from a forwarded link often browse the archive next. Make sure it is easy to scan, with dates, clear titles and labels showing what is free.

## Measure lightly

Add a question to your welcome email: "How did you hear about us?" Tally the answers once a month. If forwarding is the top answer, your issues are doing the growth work for you.
